Newspapers are a valuable resource. They record births, marriages and deaths; local news items and during the war years there were reports of local soldiers which either told their story or reported their deaths.

The Advertiser began in 1854 as Lyle's Dalkeith Monthly Advertiser. In March 1867, it became the weekly Dalkeith Advertiser. In October 1982, it merged with its sister paper the South Midlothian Advertiser to become the Advertiser. It is published every Thursday.
