Baptism
Religious practices of the Church of Scotland and other Presbyterian churches required witnesses to the baptism of a child. These witnesses could be family members, or parishioners having the same given name as the child, or sometimes the whole congregation bore witness. Records may state ‘in front of the whole congregation.’ Godparents were not recognised by the Church of Scotland as it was considered an Episcopalian/Catholic practise.
