Degrees of Kinship
ANCESTOR: One from whom a person is descended, whether on the father's or mother's side, at any distance of time; a progenitor; a forefather.
DESCENDANT: A person descended from his or her older generations.
BLOODLINE: The descendants of one individual; pedigree.
Ancient terminology
Tritavus: The male ascendant in the sixth degree – great, great, great, great, grandfather
Tritavia: The female ascendant in the sixth degree - great, great, great, great, grandmother
HALF BROTHER or HALF SISTER/ STEPBROTHER or STEPSISTER
A brother or sister of one parent, but not of both, is usually the product of a second marriage by one or both of your parents.
STEPSON or STEP DAUGHTER: A son or daughter of one's husband or wife by a former marriage.
COUSIN (a.k.a "first cousin"
Your first cousin is a child of your aunt or uncle. While you share one set of grandparents with your first cousin, you do not have the same parents.
SECOND COUSIN
Your second cousin is the grandchild of your great-aunt or great-uncle. While you share one set of great-grandparents with your second cousin, you do not have the same grandparents.
THIRD, FOURTH, AND FIFTH COUSINS
Your third cousins have the same great-great-grandparents but not the same great grandparents, fourth cousins have the same great-great-great-grandparents but not the same great-great grandparents, and so on.
ONCE REMOVED
When the words "once removed" are used to describe a relationship, it indicates that two people are from different generations (there is a difference of one generation.) “Twice removed” means that there is a two-generation difference.
KISSING COUSINS
Did you know that the term’ Kissing Cousins’ identifies cousins with whom you can have sex? It is considered genetically safe to have a sexual relationship with anyone who is a Kissing Cousin i.e. anyone who is not a first cousin.
