1861 Census
The 1861 census is the first census conducted by the office of the Registrar General for Scotland, established under the 1854 Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Scotland) Act.
The date of the 1861 census was the night of 7 April 1861. A schedule was delivered to every household in advance. The completed schedules were collected the following day, and copied into an enumerator's book. The books and schedules were then sent to the local registrar who in turn checked them and sent them to the Census Office (the original schedules were destroyed.) The census provided the following information:

ADDRESS: Name of street, place, or road, and number or name of house and whether inhabited or uninhabited.
HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS: Forename(s) Surname of each person that had spent the night in that household
RELATIONSHIP: Relation to head of family
CONDITION: Married, unmarried, widow or widower
AGE/GENDER
OCCUPATION: Rank, profession or occupation
WHERE BORN
WHETHER BLIND OR DEAF AND DUMB
THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN AGED 5-14 ATTENDING SCHOOL
THE NUMBER OF ROOMS IN THE HOUSE WITH ONE OR MORE WINDOWS.
