1841 Census
The gathering of Scottish census information in 1841 under the Home Office’s jurisdiction was organised in Scotland by the sheriffs and chief magistrates and collected largely by schoolteachers in the various parishes. The census was taken on 6 June 1841 and offers much less data than subsequent years. You will find:
CIVIL PARISH NAME
ADDRESS: Name of street, square, close, etc. and number of houses inhabited or uninhabited.
NAME: Forename, Surname, Sex and Age of each person that had spent the night in that household.
AGE/GENDER: The ages of people over 15 years old were usually rounded down to the nearest 5 years. Ages between 15 and 20 were recorded as 15; ages between 20 and 25 were recorded as 20 years old, etc. If people lied about their ages, or if their real ages were not known or reported incorrectly, the gap between the rounded age recorded on the census and their actual age may be quite significant.
OCCUPATION: Profession, Trade, Employment, or Independent means
WHERE BORN: This column asked two questions. If born in Scotland, whether born in county or otherwise. Whether Foreigner, or whether born in England or Ireland.
