ScotlandsPeople
The database at the ScotlandsPeople Centre http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ offers access to statutory registers (SRIs) since 1855, and Old Parish Registers (OPRs) dating back to 1553 for Birth, Marriages, Deaths (BMDs) and Burials.
The initial search is free returning the available number of results. To view indexes (a digital image of the register page containing the entry in which you are interested) or extracts (a certified, legally admissible copy of the specific register entry) you must purchase credits in blocks of thirty. As of 2014, one credit will allow you to view a page of indexes (one page contains twenty four index results.) To view an image will cost an additional five credits and gives the option of saving the file to your computer.
Online access is restricted to historical records deemed 100 years for births, 75 years for marriages and 50 years for death registrations to maintain the privacy of living people.
Make your money work for you and do a ‘broad’ name search, or time period search so that you get 24 possible useful results instead of only one result.
Records are sourced by registration numbers - the first three numbers signify the parish.
Example of record in the Statutory Register: 691/0020 0250. The prefix number identifies that the data was recorded in Lasswade (see parishes listed below). The last number identifies that the information is recorded as number 250 of the register.
